Evaporative Water Recovery Commercial Demonstration Unit Scheduled

water recovery from cooling towers model

    September 30, 2025

Commercial-scale demonstration unit of Aqua Liquefaction with Ionization (ALI®) evaporative water recovery scheduled for completion in 2025

Nouvel Technologies Inc, a technology company focused on effective and economic approaches to water and energy sustainability, is pleased to announce a milestone in its path to commercialization of its ALI technology. ALI uses a high-voltage electric field to create condensation of water vapor which recovers the evaporative losses from water-based cooling towers.

In 2024, Nouvel began working with Wood (Houston, TX) to model the ALI process and conduct detailed engineering of a commercial size unit to be placed into operation for demonstration. That phase is now complete and a contract for fabrication and installation has been awarded to Mako Industries (Sugarland, TX). A commercial cooling tower has been purchased and will serve as the water vapor source for the ALI unit. That cooling tower will be installed at Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI) in San Antonio, TX who will provide independent testing and evaluation services for the demonstration unit.

The cooling tower and ALI unit will be operated in a variety of conditions to demonstrate a high rate of water recovery, a reduction in chemicals use and associated blowdown volume, and minimal to no impact on normal cooling tower functions. The water quality of the incoming feed, blowdown water and recovered water will all be tested to determine any changes from ALI. Also, air quality with and without ALI will be tested for particulates, ozone, and other impurities.

“We are excited to reach this stage of development with ALI® and have high confidence that this technology will make a significant difference in water consumption across many industries. The rapid growth of data centers and their need to remove heat, for example, is straining water resources in some areas. ALI will greatly reduce the water footprint of these operations.” ---Jeffery J. Mahaffey, Chief Operating Officer
